"Indie Gaming provides insights and a depth of knowledge that you would only expect from an industry veteran." -- David Helgason, Co-Founder of Unity Technologies

The video game industry is poised to change in a significant way. Indie game entrepreneurs are the key to unlocking a future that will redefine how video games are perceived an art form, an entertainment medium, and a business. Video games are a $100 billion business that will soar to new heights when independent game developers recognize their entrepreneurial roots and hone their skills. After countless interviews with innovators and entrepreneurs at the forefront of the industry, Brian Bies has refined years of industry experience to provide readers with an easy-to-read understanding about how to be an effective entrepreneur in the video game industry. This book highlights essential strategies and tactics necessary to succeed in video games.

The next sandbox for future entrepreneurs to disrupt is an industry that is at the intersection of entertainment and technology. Indie Gaming will show you how entrepreneurship is the next noteworthy event to overtake the video game industry. And what you can do to get in on the ground floor.

Indie Gaming Finding Entrepreneurial Success in Video Games Brian Bies 9781544500065 Books

This book has a misleading title. The author has no experience in game development. It reads more like a history lesson of video games and Richard Garriott. At the end of each chapter he gives "takeaways" like: "anyone with initiative and a passion can try to break into the industry but it requires hard work and experience to be successful." Wow. Great going Brian, very insightful.

This book was represented as tips and insights for indie developers. I expected something along the lines as more business and legal tips (revenue splits with publishers, ownership of IP, motivating your team, budget shortfalls, etc). Instead what we got is a bunch of information that anyone who is into video games will already know. I.e. the three major publishers are EA, Activision Blizzard, and Ubisoft.

The amount of 5 stars on this are likely due to his family or friends. Please avoid this book.

Indie Gaming Finding Entrepreneurial Success in Video Games Brian Bies 9781544500065 Books Reviews

You really can tell a kid wrote this. Poor grammar, redundancy, poor research, exaggeration. It feels like Bies has a page requirement and fluffed the hell out of it. Didn’t make it past chapter 2.
Brian Bies not only KNOWS what he is talking about, but is so incredibly well versed in the topic of the video gaming industry. Brian is going to do incredible things and his book is only the beginning!
Doesn't seem like the author has developed his own game, or started his own Business. Wouldn't necessarily have to be successful at either, but having personal experience beyond interviews of other people may have made for a better book.
Great book with amazing insights, but does have a tendancy to reuse quotes and information. Stipl, a must read for anyone wanting to learn game design.
I used to threaten my son that if he didn't get off the dime and [fill in the blank....do his homework, get a summer job, get his college applications done, you name it] he might end up 30 years old and playing video games in my basement.
This remarkable work by Brian Bies suggests to me that I should only wish for such an outcome!
I found this book to be minutely researched and extremely informative. Mr. Bies has done an excellent job interviewing industry leaders and then consolidating and digesting their input to create his own blueprint for success in this field. Video gaming is evidently ripe for disruption, and voices like his are leading the way. Very impressive!
Have you heard about Peter Molyneux? I hadn’t before reading Indie Gaming. Peter is the mind behind Fable (a renowned video game) and Lionhead Studios. Most recently, he founded 22Cans (an indie studio) and re-entered the indie/entrepreneurial scene in gaming. His story about risk taking and understanding one's own personality traits, strengths, and weaknesses (especially within the context of a team dynamic) were some of the key takeaways I got when it comes to succeeding in the industry. It is not only applicable to prospective video game entrepreneurs, but also to people in their twenties that need to learn how to make the most of what skills they have. Thanks Brian for sharing his story!

My favorite part, as a millennial whose brother who wants to go into video game designing, was reading Chapter 6, "Finding Your Tribe Why Networking and Mentorship Makes all the Difference.” I’ve seen my brother online talking to gamers and programmers around the world and never saw it as networking—until now. I learned that everyone in the video game industry knows each other and that makes the competition and friendships that get formed all the more meaningful for people in the industry. I’m very impressed that my brother is already part of this and I take back thinking he was waisting his time. This book legitimizes video games, and it’s about time someone did.
I appreciated Bies’ call for diversity and the importance of intersectionality for the success of video games but overall his book, for me, was just poorly written. Although his points were inspirational they became rather redundant quickly. At some point he said the same thing within a paragraphs length of one another. I also had an issue with the outline breakdown of what each chapter was about and the chapter take aways. It read like a grade school textbook rather than a book on business. I think if there were edits to some the superfluous information and anecdotes the overall message of the book would shine more!
